Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge

Posted on: 28/03/2019

On Thursday 21st March, a selection of year 10 students took part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge. The workshop was designed to develop students’ public speaking skills and raise confidence levels. The students worked with our visitor Carl Meah for the whole day on a range of speaking activities, where they shared interesting insights and experiences.

For their speeches, each student chose a topic which was personal to them. The speeches ranged in topic from a humorous look at our least favourite foods to serious topics affecting young people, such as knife crime and body image. It was wonderful to see students who were slightly reluctant at the beginning of the day, stand up to take the stage and speak out in front of their peers by the end of the workshop.

Here is a selection of students’ comments about the workshop:

“I learnt a lot from today and I will definitely benefit from it in future.” - Jessica

“I started at the beginning feeling really nervous and I came out feeling a lot more confident.” - Keya.

“Good and very interactive.” - Tyrese

“Really good, improved my confidence and taught me skills I can use in citizenship and my English speaking exam.” - Oluwatobi

At the end of the workshop, three students were chosen to compete and present their speeches in assembly. A winner and a runner up will be announced next week to represent our school in the regional final which is taking place on the 30th April 2019 in Bentley Wood High School.
