SCIENCE
SCIENCE FACULTY
The Science Faculty at Nower Hill are very enthusiastic about Science teaching and work extremely well together to provide an exciting, challenging and relevant delivery of Science at all Key Stages. In September 2010, the team will consist of 31 staff (20 teachers, a Science subject assistant and 10 technicians) who use practical work, challenging lessons, well prepared resources and contemporary issues to motivate and inspire pupils to achieve their potential and hopefully to continue to study science further. We work together in a collaborative fashion to plan, regularly review and improve all aspects of the Science curriculum.
There are six post holders in the faculty, other than the Head of Faculty and the new post of Science Curriculum Leader, whose responsibilities comprise Curriculum Leader or Assistant Curriculum Leader at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. We also have an Advanced Skills Teacher. In addition, all Science staff are encouraged to take responsibility for one area of development egs display work, reward system, science club.
Students follow the OCR Gateway Science Course at KS4. They have the option to take all three sciences separately or if necessary to take the OCR National. If they chose OCR Core Science in Y10 then in Y11 they will study OCR Gateway Additional Science. Approximately 40% of KS4 students (120 per year group) take the three separate sciences.
At Key Stage 3, September 2010 introduces Year 7 to the school and we are introducing a new scheme of work with an emphasis on personalised learning, assessment for learning, ICT skills and contemporary science.
By September 2010 there will be 15 science laboratories, which are situated in one area of the school. Five labs will be brand new and all of these rooms have PCs, interactive whiteboards and data projectors. We also have a Science ICT suite with 25 PCs and a wide range of independent learning, revision and assessment resources. The Science Faculty makes very effective use of our on-line Managed Learning Environment.
An excellent team of full and part time technicians assist our work in science led by the Science Technical Manager. The Faculty has three well equipped preparation areas and a well stocked chemical store. There is a science team area containing networked computers and a wide range of resources. All teachers are provided with a laptop computer. We also have a Science subject assistant who provides withdrawal and in class support for both those needing extra help and G&T pupils.
At KS5 we offer AS/A levels in all three sciences. We have a large number of students in each year with 5 Biology Groups, 4 Chemistry groups and 3 Physics groups averaging 17 students in each. This large uptake post-16 and the introduction of Y7 has enabled the appointment of new staff.
This is an exciting and important time for the faculty. The huge development of the Science faculty has enabled the new role of Science Curriculum Leader to be established and offers a fantastic opportunity to develop leadership and management skills in a very successful Science Faculty. Working in conjunction with the Head of Faculty, the Science Curriculum Leader will lead a warm and supportive team in a forward looking school in which professional development has a high priority. This new post will provide superb training for someone wishing to go on to be a Head of Science and who has ambition for senior leadership.
