The Languages Faculty is an enthusiastic, innovative, hard-working and committed team of colleagues who work collaboratively to give each other support and provide a stimulating and challenging environment for all our pupils. We offer French, German, Spanish, Latin, Classical Studies, Ancient History and Classical Civilisation to all learners regardless of their ability, in the firm belief that all pupils can have a successful and rewarding learning experience in these subject areas.

There are currently six teachers of French, German and Spanish in the faculty, as well as four colleagues who teach Latin and Classical Studies.

Each member of the faculty has the responsibility of representation on at least one of the committees/working groups within the school.

At present all pupils study 2 x 50 mins French per week and 1 x 50 mins German in Year 8.

In Year 9 pupils study two languages for 2 periods a week each chosen from French, German, Spanish and Latin. All Year 8 pupils study Classical Studies for one period per week. French, German, Spanish, Latin and Classical Civilisation are offered at GCSE level as well as Ancient Greek. In Years 10 and 11 pupils have 3 periods per week. Year 7 pupils joining us in September 2010 will study 2 periods of French each week.

Our 6th Form opened in 2006 (as part of a Harrow Collegiate) and is now thriving with some 280+ students. We teach French, Latin and Classical Civilisation at AS and A levels. Pupils wishing to study Spanish or German currently do so elsewhere in the Collegiate. There is a challenge and an opportunity for us to create sufficient demand for Spanish at ‘A’ level to run it here.

We are an extremely well resourced faculty with five fully equipped classrooms in the Languages area for the teaching of French, German and Spanish.

As ICT plays an important role in teaching and learning each colleague is given a laptop for use in school or at home and the faculty has access to its own ICT suite shared with Humanities. In addition to this each classroom has:

We also have a wide variety of resources, some of which we have developed ourselves, which are stored centrally in the Languages Faculty. Pupils are also able to access the Managed Learning Environment (Fronter) at home via the internet.

We have organised trips to Germany and France and have an established link with a school in Douai, in the North of France. Pupils who study French, Latin or Classical Civilisation at GCSE are given the opportunity to visit the ancient sites in Provence and improve their French, and pupils doing GCSE Latin or Classical Civilisation are able to visit the ancient sites in Italy.

We introduced Spanish three years ago and this is proving to be a very popular language, with now over 100 pupils studying Spanish in KS4. We now wish to develop this language further and look forward to appointing a teacher who could offer Spanish to ‘A’ Level, with French or German in KS3.
