HEAD OF ENGLISH FACULTY
The English Faculty consists of a team of enthusiastic, creative and committed specialists. We place a strong emphasis on oral work, active approaches to teaching and learning and wide reading at each key stage. At the heart of our excellent record of examination achievement lies a
collaborative approach to planning. Units of work, resources and assessment procedures are in place for every module.
Four lessons of fifty minutes each week are timetabled for pupils in Years 8, 9 and 10. Pupils in Year 11 have five lessons of fifty minutes to allow for exam preparation.
We prepare students for both GCSE English and English Literature following the WJEC syllabuses. The majority are entered for both examinations, with a small group entered for the WJEC Entry Level
Examination as well as English GCSE. In 2009, our English Language results were 85.8% A* – C, with 100% of students achieving A* – G. In English Literature, results were 90.6% A* - C, with 99.6% of students achieving A*-G.
Our new Sixth Form opened in September 2006. We currently have over ninety students studying A Level English. There are fifty-six students studying A Level English Literature with two classes at AS Level and two classes at A2 Level. Furthermore, forty students are studying AS Level Language and Literature. In 2009, A2 results for English Literature showed 100% pass rate with 61.90% achieving A/B grades.
The Faculty is very well resourced: English classrooms are all equipped with interactive whiteboards, teacher PCs and class libraries. Furthermore, all colleagues are provided with their own laptops. Our
work is supported by an attractive and well-resourced team room which houses a computer, printer and scanner. In addition, we share a fully fitted ICT suite. Focused administrative support also facilitates the smooth running of the Faculty.
The atmosphere of the Faculty is enthusiastic and positive. Teaching in this environment is productive and, most of all, exciting. It is a faculty that teachers and students enjoy being a part of, with all members willing to contribute to its continued success.
