Dear Parent/Carer,

Nower Hill High School offers a number of instrumental lessons for your child. At present we offer the following instruments:

Violin

Clarinet

Trumpet

Keyboard

Viola

Saxophone

French horn

Voice

Cello

Flute

Trombone

Steel Pans

Double bass

The lessons are during the school day and will require your child to miss ½ hour of a lesson per week; they are expected to catch up on missed work. All timetables are on a rotational basis so we attempt to make sure that pupils will not miss the same lesson frequently. Your son/ daughter will attend their lesson as part of a small group of 2 or 3 pupils.

It is expected that most pupils will either have their own or rented instruments. Unfortunately we do not have sufficient instruments to lend to pupils however, details can be given for the hiring or buying of instruments through the school at an educational discount, and no VAT. Instruments can be stored in the instrumental store, which we try and keep locked during the day, and to which only members of staff have keys. However, you are advised to insure your child’s instrument, as we do not take responsibility for the damage or theft of instruments left in the instrument store.

Pupils are expected to attend every lesson, unless they are absent from school. They will have to get their diary signed by the teacher of the lesson they will miss at least two days before their instrumental lesson. This then gives us time to rearrange the timetable if a test is planned for that lesson and the pupil is unable to attend. Peripatetic teachers are instructed not to teach anyone who does not have permission from their classroom teacher.

It is expected that pupils should practise every day in order to improve; your support and encouragement in this would be appreciated. When the pupil is at the appropriate standard they will be required to attend one of the relevant school ensembles for their instrument.

In order to manage the administrative demands of arranging timetables, lessons will not commence until the school has received 3 post-dated cheques – one for each term, or a cheque to cover payment for the entire year. These should arrive before September in order that your child can be included in the timetables. Applications without cheques will not be accepted.

If you wish your child to stop having lessons (a term’s notice in writing is required to do this) we will return any remaining cheques.

The post-dated cheques should be dated as follows:

Autumn Term Wednesday 1st September 2010

Spring Term Tuesday 4th January 2011

Summer Term Tuesday 26th April 2011

The fees for 2010/2011 will be as follows:

1 st instrument £60.00 per term

2 nd instrument £45.00 per term

subsequent children £45.00 per term

GCSE – 1 st instrument FREE until Easter, final term £60 for year 11s

AS/A2 Level – 1 st instrument FREE as part of a group. If you wish your son/daughter to have an individual lesson then lessons will be £30 per term.
