ST. MICHAEL'S SCHOOL KILOLO TANZANIA, AFRICA

THINK GLOBALLY

Our lives are shaped increasingly by global influences. We live, study and work alongside people from all over the world, bringing together a rich tapestry of cultural heritage within our community.

THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY!        We travel internationally for work and pleasure. The food in our local supermarket is sourced from all around the world. The internet provides information and images from distant places direct to our homes and classrooms at the click of a mouse. Global issues such as sustainable development, fair trade and environmental change are very important areas covered within our curriculum, but at Nower Hill we believe that for young people to become truly active and informed citizens, it is vital that they understand the global influences that affect not only their lives but also those of children in very different parts of the world.

As such  we are very pleased to establish a bond between Nower Hill and St Michael’s School, Kilolo, Tanzania, a link which we hope will form the basis of an exciting exchange of ideas, experiences, resources and, above all, an enduring friendship between the teachers and pupils of both schools.

The East African country of Tanzania is bordered on the East by the Indian  Ocean, to the North is Kenya and to the South Mozambique. To the West is Lake Tanganyika and Zaire and the North West borders on Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda. The main part of the country comprises savannah plateau divided by rift valleys and a North/South mountain chain rising to Kilimanjaro at 5894 metres (19,340ft),  the highest point in Africa.

Emmanuel International has been working in Partnership with the Diocese of Ruaha for a number of years. Among our full time staff members working in Iringa are Anne Lapage and Edna Santos. We also have a number of Voluntary Development Workers who are on 2 year work placements undertaking a variety of assignments. Our good friend, Archbishop Donald Mtetemela has been a good friend of EI for many years and we work under his direction in many areas around Iringa. The lives of tens of thousands of people are being transformed by the various practical aid projects and spiritual ministries that we are undertaking.

In 2005 our Team continued the work put in by our team in 2004 - doing some vital building work on a school in Kilolo for under privileged children and running children’s club activities as well as responding to other practical needs as they arise. They was plenty of opportunity to meet with and work with local people who had so much to teach us. We also visited local churches and had the privilege of seeing what God is doing in this great land of Tanzania!

We went to one of Tanzania’s lesser known but magnificently beautiful game reserves for a couple of days. We saw elephants, crocs(!), hippos, giraffes, and perhaps the odd lion or two!

We aslo took you to the African Markets of Iringa to experience the hustle and bustle of street life in the city.
