Trip to TANZANIA ’08 - St. Michael’s School

+ Nower Hill High School

WHO?

Ten students from Nower Hill’s new 6th Form, seven students from Yr13 and three from Yr12, accompanied by five members of staff travelled to meet pupils and staff at St. Michael’s Anglican Secondary School in the village of Kilolo in Tanzania.

WHEN & WHERE?

31st JULY - 17th AUGUST 2008

They flew overnight to Dar es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania and then across country by coach to a small town called Iringa. The final part of the journey was a 35 km route along an unmade dirt road to the village of Kilolo.

WHY?

The Archbishop of Tanzania, Donald Mtetemela, whose idea it was to start building St. Michael’s school in the year 2000 invited a group from Nower Hill to visit and help strengthen the school partnership we have been developing for the last 3 years. We took him up on his kind invitation with huge enthusiasm. Our teaching staff explored ways in which St. Michael’s and Nower Hill might benefit from sharing our different experiences, teaching styles and practices. We liaised closely with the school to see what resources we could out with us.

Our students learnt of the daily struggle of people in Kilolo living a life of subsistence, but they also appreciated how they take each day as it comes. They came away with first hand knowledge of school life in a rural setting in a developing country and made firm friends with everyone there.

WHAT?

Our students attended classes alongside St. Michael’s pupils and joined in with sports and other extra curricular activities like football, netball and general P.E. Our teachers assisted and taught classes and explored practical ways in which Nower Hill might support St. Michael’s in the future. We all had the opportunity to get involved in the actual building work still continuing at St. Michael’s and also shared play time with the younger children in Kilolo village itself.

The purpose of our visit was to encourage & strengthen the partnership

between our schools.
