Nower Hill High celebrates World Book Day!

Posted on: 20/03/2019

On Thursday 7th March, World Book Day, local author Beth Shepherd was invited into school to host two creative workshops. The first workshop was held with Year 7 and the second was with Year 8. Students learnt about the structure of a short story and how to craft their own stories and develop their narratives in more detail. Beth also read a short excerpt from her own novel and followed this with a quick Q&A session for the students where they could ask questions about the process of publishing a novel and her inspiration for her work.

Year 7 and Year 8 students were invited to dress up as a character from their favourite novel to celebrate their love of reading. Staff also joined in the fun dressing up as well. Characters ranging from 19th century novelist Charles Dickens to 21st century novelist J.K. Rowling could be seen roaming the grounds of Nower Hill!

Thursday lunch time proved to be extremely busy in the Hall as we hosted a Scholastic book fair where students could use their World Book Day tokens to purchase books of their choosing. Alongside this, 6KS - a sixth form registration group, hosted a World Book Day Bake-Off! competition to raise money for St Marcelin’s school in Zimbabwe, as part of their commitment to charitable causes. Students donated bakes and then came together at lunchtime to purchase the tastiest goods! The winner of the Bake-Off! competition was Year 7 Kayla Saunders, who baked a magnificent Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed cake. Altogether, £170.05 was raised for St Marcelin’s. A fantastic effort by the Nower Hill community.
