Year 12 Employability Skills Workshop

Posted on: 16/10/2019

Twenty-four Year 12 students had the opportunity to take part in a STEM employability skills workshop on 10th October. The workshop is part of a nationwide education programme, funded by IGD, a training and research charity, called Feeding Britain’s Future. The programme informs and inspires young people about the world of work and helps build their employability skills.

Four employers from the food and grocery industry talked to our students about their careers and how they use their knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths in their daily work. Students heard from a Supply Chain Director from Quest Nutrition, a Store Manager from Aldi, a Buyer from Sainsburys and a Communications Manager from IGD.

The employers gave the students good advice for when they start employment and how to make the most of all the opportunities that are given to them in the workplace. Students were also able to practice introducing themselves to the employers, as they would do at a job interview, receiving useful feedback about the impression they had created. An exercise looking at CVs and covering letters helped our Year 12 students develop their understanding of best practice from an employer’s perspective.

Students benefitted greatly from meeting these employers - it has made them broaden their ideas about using STEM in their future careers, taught them how to produce excellent job applications and how to make a good impression at interviews. We are grateful to the employers for taking the time to come into school and meet with our 6th Formers.
